Rwanda Development Board (RDB)
Date: 29th-January 2009
Rwanda created the Rwanda Development Board(RDB) modeled after similar economic development agencies created by other emerging nations, particularly some of the “Tiger” countries.
Components are: Rwanda Investment & Export Promotion Agency (RIEPA), Centre for Support to Small and Medium Enterprises (CAPMER), Rwanda Commercial Registration of Service Agencies (RCRSA) , The Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) unit and Privatisation Secretariat. Others are: Rwanda Information and Communication Technology Authority (RITA), Rwanda Office of Tourism and National Parks (ORTPN), and a Unit of Human Resource and Institutional Capacity Development from HIDA.
The RDB’s main responsibility will be to fast-track development activities by both the government and the private sector. The RDB was created by merging eight existing government development agencies into one that will report directly to the office of the President. Joe Ritchie, a Chicago businessman who helped organize the Friends of Rwanda, and is co-chair of the Presidential Advisory Council, has been appointed CEO of the RDB.
Other mergers have been created by the government. Rwandan Insurance Scheme (RAMA) and the Social Security Fund of Rwanda (CSR) are under Rwanda Social Security Board; Rwanda Agricultural Development Authority (RADA), National Agricultural Research Institute (ISAR), and Rwanda Animal Resources Development Authority (RARDA) are now under the Rwanda Agricultural Board.
The boards of coffee (OCIR-CAFÉ) and tea (OCIR -THE) have merged with the Rwanda Horticulture Development Authority (RHODA) to form Rwanda Agricultural Export Development Board.
Rwanda Bio-Medical Centre coordinates services of the King Faisal Hospital, National Reference Laboratory, Trac Plus, Health Communications Centre, National Centre for Blood Transfusion, AIDS Control Commission (CNLS), Medical Maintenance Workshop, the pharmaceutical laboratory (LABOPHAR), drugs procurement agency (CAMERWA) and the International Centre for Clinical Research. The centre also controls training in all medical sciences in the country.
The Secretariat of the Works for General Interest (TIG) and the National Prisons Service (NPS) merged to form the Rwanda Correctional Services.
